The DIF’s Tom Redmayne – At the forefront of self-recording

The PAS database and self-recording

On 23rd May 2023, the PAS sent out an invitation to key representatives of the UK metal detecting organisations to attend a “Finds recording day” at the British Museum.

Delegates were from PAS, DIF, AMDS, NCMD, A&MD magazine and Sassy Searchers.

The meeting was an opportunity to introduce the delegates to the way the current PAS database is used to record finds and to emphasise its value in being a primary source for research.

The day was also intended to promote discussion and feedback on how the PAS database could be improved and made more accessible for all those using it. A key part of this was to look at using technology such as apps to help detectorists submit their finds accurately and quickly, and also to investigate how initiatives such as dedicated club recorders and/or other nominated members of the detecting community as recorders could all help ease the burden of the FLO’s.

There are, of course, already a good number of the detecting community that are more directly involved with the PAS as self-recorders, myself included.
